Jazz venues I visit in N.E. Lincolnshire (there are others which I haven't yet visited)
Tuesdays 8:30, Bargate Club (Conservative Club), corner of Bargate and Augusta Street, Grimsby. Music by The Dixieland Jazz Band. A competent band they play Trad not Dixieland. Well attended. Many of the customers constantly jabbering. Venue is overheated in cold weather and underventilated whatever the weather.
Wednesdays 8:30, The New Riverside Jazz Men have moved from the Lynton to a new venue. It's Lucarly's, Wilton Road, Humberston (very near Tesco, Cleethorpes.) Very polished Trad/Mainsteam band. Well attended. Many of the customers constantly jabbering.
Saturdays 8:30, New Orleans Jazz Club, Queen Street, Louth. The only venue in the U.K. devoted to the New Orleans style. Music by the South Wold Jazz Band. Poorly attended.
Sundays 8:00, Blackfriars Arts Centre, Boston. This venue is in what is left of the refectory of a monastery, and is soon to be sold.
Being new to the area I don't play regularly. I sometimes deputise for other drummers. I shall post gigs which I will be playing below.
Stanley, Falkland Islands, 1961
Music for the dances, held in the Town Hall, was at that time provided by records.
I organised a band. We would play two or three sets during an evening.
